Now that you understand basic search techniques and the differences between personal and scholarly research, it’s time to try out what you’ve learned.
For this assignment, select a topic that you might want to use for a term paper. (If you are writing a term paper for another class, feel free to use that topic.)
    1. Using your favorite search engine, search for information on this topic. If you don’t have a favorite, Google is a good choice.
    2. Select one of the results and take some notes on the content.
    3. Save a screen shot of this website and paste it into a new Microsoft Word document. The screen shot should show the top of your screen. For assistance on taking screen shots, click here. (However, if you know how to use the Snippet tool, you can do that instead of using the Print Screen (prtscn) button but be sure to catch the top so the search shows.)
    4. Below the screen shot, type in the title of your selection.
    5. Below the title, in one or two paragraphs, describe the information that you found. (Save your notes; you will need them for the next assignment)
    6. Check spelling and grammar and save the file.
    7. Submit your completed assignment by following the directions linked below. Please check the Course Calendar for specific due dates.
Save your assignment as a Microsoft Word document. (Mac users, please remember to append the “.docx” extension to the filename.) The name of the file should be your first initial and last name, followed by an underscore and the name of the assignment, and an underscore and the date. An example is shown below:

In this piece of the project, compare the results of your first search with one that you perform on the Library Resources page.
    1. Using the same topic that you used for the previous assignment, search for information using the search screen at the top of the Library and Learning Services page.
    2. Select one of these results and take some notes on the content. Save a screen shot of this website and paste it into a new Microsoft Word document. The screen shot should show the top of your screen. For assistance on taking screen shots, click here.
    3. Below the screen shot, type in the title of your selection.
    4. Below the title, in one or two paragraphs, compare your notes from the two selections. Some questions that you might answer are:
      • Which search tool would you use for a term paper and why?
      • Was the information more complete in one selection?
      • What audience was the author trying to reach?
      • Did you understand the material?

Note: these are only suggestions; you may have other points to compare that are not listed here.
    5. Check spelling and grammar and save the file.
    6. Submit your completed assignment by following the directions linked below. Please check the Course Calendar for specific due dates.
